Zentangling Fun

random bright colors

it’s been a bit of a struggle for me to embrace the word “artist” and apply it to myself.  and although i’m getting better about that, drawing is still not really my thing.  sure, i’ve always done a bit of idle doodling…. but not legitimate drawing (hence, the reluctance to claim the a-word).  and besides not being very good at it, it’s not really what i aspire to.

the one i did in class

but i was intrigued with zentangle and eagerly signed up for a class with cecie mccaffery recently at gallery 204.  wow – now here is a cool art form for me!  you don’t need to know how to draw.   you just start with some basic little patterns and before you know it you’ve created a really amazing design!  very fun and quite possibly addictive.

original

most zentangles are created in black and white although it’s not a hard and fast rule.  here is the original.  i just thought it might be fun to color them in photoshop (maybe a whole separate addiction – how many ways can you change the look??)

light colors

the other cool thing about zentangle is that it’s a practice.  it’s used for all kinds of therapeutic purposes besides being just plain fun.  it can be included within other art pieces but also stands well alone.  if you haven’t tried it, you should!!

doodled this one in the car while driving to oregon

  1. I love these Patty. I think it is addictive. I have done only a few, and invested in a book and the proper pens to occupy myself while I'm healing from surgery. Great therapy .. takes our little minds away from it all, which is just what we need sometimes. Glad you found it. I'm sure the class was fun. I'd like to take one. xxDonna

  6. Marvelous zentangle designs, Patty. I think the the first B/W is my favorite. I do have an artist friend who combines some zentangle in her art pieces. They are beautiful so you'll have to give it a try.
