Number 6

10 years ago, as we traveled and my mind had time to wander, i had a vision of creating an experience that could bring the beauties of nature to those no longer able to access them.  i envisioned a presentation that would involve photos of natural places paired with words of poetry, all set to carefully-selected music.

i had no idea of the technology required to put together such a show and had no one to help me, so i stumbled through, little by little and, eventually, almost 2 years later, launched the first nomadic notebook show.  i used a laptop computer and purchased a projector and a karaoke system for sound.  i was still teaching at the time, but i contacted activity directors in assisted living facilities on my days off and started doing my little show!

the residents loved it and i realized that there would be a need for a 2nd show.  since we had no plans for another year-long cross-country trip, i decided that the diversity of california could comprise an entire show.  in fact, i put together 2 shows, all based on remote areas of the state.

next was the southwestern states.  then the pacific northwest.  and…. i have just completed the finishing touches on show number 6…. colorado autumn.  it contains about 500 images of colorado in fall, as well as the grand canyon, 5 poems and 9 songs, some with a native american twist.  really, really colorful as you can see!!

the marketing piece of this whole venture has been the most challenging.  while the residents love the shows once they get there, i have to book with activity directors and they are busy, stressed and on very tight budgets these days.  then once the show is booked, getting people to attend something they aren’t familiar with is another challenge.

i do have a few wonderful ad’s that actually call me, so that keeps things rolling.  also, i will be working with a brand new beautiful memory care community that i’ve watched being built just down the street from my house and i’m really excited about that!   i know nothing worthwhile comes easily… so i will keep plugging away because i love doing the shows!!

p.s. i am off retreating tomorrow...... see you next week!!

  5. Thanks, girls!! Kathryn, I've always been kind of hesitant to share my shows with other than the intended audience. I was thinking this time, though, of maybe sharing with a few friends.... only if they are interested!
